Miles to go for a Pulitzer Prize…

One year ago today, May 24, Bud and I were in New York City to see Raquel, Bud’s daughter, receive the Pulitzer Prize.   We knew it could happen when the buzz started about a series she had written in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.  First she won the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, the Worth Bingham Prize for Investigative Journalism and a George Polk Award.   All incredible honors, but to win all of those and then the Pulitzer Prize, was like a thoroughbred winning the Triple Crown!  We’re so proud of her and enjoyed being there as she was honored by David Kennedy alongside reporters from The New York Times and The Washington Post.

We rode to Columbia University in a long black limousine (a string of them, in fact) and acted as goofy as we always do.  At the ceremony, I was all about the little blue Tiffany’s bag, which held a small crystal award.  The actual Pulitzer was a certificate presented by Kennedy.  Our table-mates at the luncheon all gathered around excitedly as we untied the Tiffany’s box and checked out the goods while the ceremony was going on.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting Jett Williams, the daughter of Hank Williams, who was accepting a special citation for her late father (pictured below).  She was as personable as she could be and I nearly fell out once we got home and saw a special on television featuring her and the man who escorted her to the Pulitzer ceremony (her husband and lawyer) about her fight with Hank Jr. for her part of her daddy’s estate.  That they played Hank Williams music as we were leaving the ceremony was the icing on the cake!

I know Bud has never been prouder, and I haven’t either.  We had a wonderful time in New York with both of Bud’s daughters, their husbands and their mother and step-father.  Looking back, it seems too incredible for words.  It was a wonderful year for her and for us.  Now, we look forward to her year as a Nieman Fellow at the Neiman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University.  Where will this girl’s career take her?  We don’t know what’s next…but we’re along for the ride!

Here’s a link to the series that won the awards…
